Background of the Study:
Access to healthcare for the elderly is a growing concern in many developing regions, particularly as populations age. In Yobe State, elderly individuals often face unique challenges in accessing healthcare services due to limited mobility, financial constraints, and inadequate geriatric care. Older adults are more susceptible to chronic diseases, and timely medical intervention is crucial to managing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis (Okeke, 2023). However, many elderly residents in Yobe State encounter barriers such as long distances to health facilities, lack of transportation, and insufficient social support, all of which contribute to delayed or foregone care. Additionally, low literacy levels and cultural norms may further inhibit their ability to navigate complex healthcare systems.
Government initiatives in Yobe State have sought to improve healthcare access for the elderly through subsidized services and community outreach programs. Despite these efforts, significant gaps remain, particularly in rural areas where healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped. The quality of healthcare provided to the elderly is further compromised by a shortage of healthcare professionals trained in geriatric care (Aminu, 2024). Recent studies have highlighted that improved access to healthcare can significantly enhance the quality of life and reduce mortality among the elderly (Ibrahim, 2025). This study aims to assess the extent of healthcare access among the elderly in Yobe State, identify key barriers, and propose targeted interventions to improve health outcomes in this vulnerable population.
Statement of the Problem:
In Yobe State, access to healthcare for the elderly is severely limited by various barriers. Financial constraints, transportation difficulties, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure combine to restrict access to necessary medical services for older adults (Umar, 2023). Many elderly individuals face long travel distances to reach health facilities, and the lack of specialized geriatric care further compounds their health risks. Furthermore, low levels of health literacy and cultural factors may discourage the elderly from seeking timely care, resulting in untreated chronic conditions and higher mortality rates. The current health system in Yobe State appears ill-equipped to meet the needs of its aging population, leading to disparities in health outcomes. These challenges necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of healthcare access among the elderly in Yobe State to develop strategies that address the unique needs of this demographic and improve overall quality of life (Saleh, 2024).
